Shree Pema Chholing Ghyang Basic School was established in 2049 B.S. with the dream and determination of the people of Nakote who believed that education is the foundation for a better future for their children. At a time when educational opportunities were limited in the community, local people came together with a shared vision of creating a school where children could receive quality education while remaining connected to their culture, values, and community.

The establishment of the school was the result of the dedication, sacrifice, and contribution of many individuals. Mr. Kancha Lama played an important role in the foundation of the school by purchasing land for the establishment of the school. In addition, Mr. Sarki Sherpa and Mr. Jimmy Lama (Founder of HELP) generously donated land to support the development of the school. These valuable contributions created the foundation upon which the educational journey of Nakote began.

Mr. Lhakpa Singgi Sherpa, the founding Chairperson of the school, played a crucial leadership role during the early establishment period. The journey was not easy, and one of the biggest challenges was obtaining approval from the District Education Office. To receive the official approval letter, Mr. Lhakpa Singgi Sherpa had to travel to Chautara seventeen times, facing many difficulties and hardships. His dedication, patience, and determination finally resulted in the successful approval and establishment of the school.

After the approval, the villagers of Nakote worked together to build the first school infrastructure. Community members contributed their labour for months without expecting payment and personally carried the necessary materials required during the construction period. The support of trekkers, who donated thousands of rupees, also played an important role in purchasing essential materials needed for the school.

When the first two classrooms were completed, around 25 to 35 students were enrolled in different grades. Due to limited infrastructure, all students had to study in those two rooms. During this early stage, Mr. Purna Gautam, former Principal of Melamchi Ghyang Higher Secondary School, provided valuable technical guidance and support for the development of the school.

With financial support from Action Aid Nepal, the school was later expanded to four classrooms and education was extended from Grade 1 to Grade 5. However, the school continued to operate with limited resources, with only two teachers managing multiple classes. Despite these challenges, the commitment of teachers, parents, students, and community members helped the school continue its journey.

Later, with the support of Nepal Education Initiative Organization (NEIO), founded by Mr. Wayne Cheung from the USA, the school infrastructure was further strengthened with the construction of nine classrooms. Afterward, Helambu Education Livelihood Partnership (HELP) continued supporting the development of the school and helped construct an additional six classrooms. During this important phase, Mr. Jimmy Lama from Nakote, the founder of HELP, made a significant contribution through his dedication and leadership towards the improvement of education in the community.

A major turning point in the history of the school came on 12th Baisakh 2072 B.S., when a devastating earthquake struck the region and caused massive destruction. All school buildings were damaged, and educational activities were completely stopped. However, the strong determination and unity of the people of Nakote showed their deep belief in the importance of education. With the support of HELP and the continuous efforts of local villagers, the school was reconstructed within one year, and classes were resumed. This achievement remains a proud example of the community's courage and commitment towards the education of future generations.

Over the years, the school continued to grow and was upgraded from Play Group to Grade 8, providing more educational opportunities for children in the community. Many dedicated teachers have served the school throughout its journey, contributing their knowledge, time, and efforts towards the development of students. In recent years, the school has continued to improve its facilities to create a safer and better learning environment. With the valuable support of Tsering’s Fund, the old and damaged roofs of the school buildings were renovated. This support has helped protect classrooms from weather-related damage and provided a more comfortable environment for students and teachers.

At present, Shree Pema Chholing Ghyang Basic School continues its mission of providing quality education in a safe, caring, and supportive environment. The school receives support from different stakeholders, including the local government, which supports six teachers, and Tsering's Fund, which supports two teachers with addition to this one teacher supported by Ketaketi Belgium. The school continues to work with the support of parents, community members, donors, organizations, teachers, and well-wishers to provide better educational opportunities for children.

Today, Shree Pema Chholing Ghyang Basic School stands as a symbol of the dreams, dedication, and unity of the Nakote community. The journey of the school reflects the belief that education can transform lives, empower children, and create positive change for future generations.

 

Key Milestones of Our Journey

2049 B.S. – Foundation of Our School

Shree Pema Chholing Ghyang Basic School was established with the dream of the Nakote community to provide education and a better future for children.

2050 B.S. – Official Recognition

The school received official approval on 9th Poush 2050 B.S. with one teaching position, beginning its journey as a recognized educational institution.

2059 B.S. – Introduction of English Medium Education

The school gradually introduced English-medium education to provide better learning opportunities for students.

2065–2066 B.S. – Community School and Academic Expansion

The school became a community school and expanded its educational level up to Grade 6, increasing access to education for local children.

Infrastructure Growth Through Support

With support from ActionAid Nepal, NEIO, HELP, and generous individuals, the school expanded its classrooms and improved learning facilities.

2072–2073 B.S. – Rebuilding After Earthquake

The devastating earthquake of 2072 B.S. damaged the school infrastructure. With the support of HELP and the dedication of the local community, the school was reconstructed and reopened in 2073 B.S.

Current Achievement – ECD to Grade 8

Today, the school provides English-medium education from ECD to Grade 8, focusing on quality education, values, and overall child development.

2082 B.S. – Renovation and Improvement

With the generous support of Tsering’s Fund, the old leaking roofs of the school buildings were replaced with new roofs, creating a safer and more comfortable learning environment for students.

Present Day – Continuing Our Mission

With support from the local government, Tsering’s Fund, parents, and well-wishers, we continue working towards better facilities and brighter opportunities for every child.
